χλαμύς refers to a short cloak or mantle, particularly the military cape worn by soldiers and rulers. It appears only in Matthew's passion narrative. In Matthew 27:28, the soldiers 'stripped him and put a scarlet cloak (χλαμύδα κοκκίνην) on him' as part of their mockery—dressing Jesus as a pretend king with a mock royal robe. In Matthew 27:31, after mocking him, they 'stripped him of the cloak (τὴν χλαμύδα)' and put his own clothes back on before leading him to crucifixion. The scarlet military cloak was meant to ridicule Jesus' claim to kingship, but ironically testified to the truth they were mocking.
