V-PPM/P-GMP  |  1× in 1 sense
to be storm-tossed, to be violently buffeted by weather, to be tempest-driven
This verb describes being buffeted or driven about by a storm, particularly at sea. Luke uses it to describe Paul's situation during the disastrous voyage to Rome: 'And because we were violently storm-tossed, the next day they began to jettison the cargo.' The vivid detail captures the desperation of a ship at the mercy of Mediterranean winter weather, with crew and passengers battling for survival. Ancient sea travel was perilous, and storms like this one could easily end in shipwreck, as indeed this voyage eventually did on the island of Malta.

Senses
1. sense 1 To be violently storm-tossed, buffeted by tempest. Acts 27:18 narrates the crisis during Paul's voyage to Rome: 'Since we were being violently storm-tossed (cheimazomenon), the next day they began throwing the cargo overboard.' The multilingual glosses—Spanish 'siendo azotados por la tempestad,' French 'tempête,' English 'being storm-tossed'—all convey violent weather. The continuous battering forced the crew to lighten the ship, and eventually led to shipwreck on Malta (Acts 27:41-44). This is the word's only New Testament use.
