on the ground, to the ground, earthward
χαμαί is an adverb meaning 'on the ground' or 'to the ground'—at ground level, earthward. John uses it twice in quick succession in his Gospel. In John 9:6, Jesus spits χαμαί ('on the ground'), makes mud with the saliva, and spreads it on the blind man's eyes before sending him to wash in Siloam. In John 18:6, when Jesus declares 'I am he' to those coming to arrest him, they 'drew back and fell to the ground (ἔπεσαν χαμαί)'—the divine name's power knocking them down. Both uses involve action toward or at ground level.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 The two uses show χαμαί in contexts of Christ's power. In John 9:6, Jesus stoops to the ground to create healing mud, demonstrating incarnational humility—God touching earth to bring light. In John 18:6, his divine self-revelation sends his arresters to the ground, demonstrating sovereign power—even those coming to seize him fall prostrate. The French à terre and Spanish a tierra preserve the groundward direction. Jesus both stoops to earth in mercy and casts down to earth in judgment.
