χάλαζ-α G5464
Hail; hailstones sent as divine judgment in apocalyptic visions.
Denotes hail or hailstones, a natural phenomenon that in Scripture consistently functions as an instrument of divine judgment. All four NT occurrences appear in Revelation, echoing the plague of hail on Egypt (Exodus 9:18-26) and the cosmic theophany traditions of the Old Testament. In Revelation 8:7 hail mixed with fire and blood devastates the earth; in 11:19 great hail accompanies the opening of God's temple in heaven; and in 16:21 enormous hailstones weighing about a talent fall on the rebellious. Spanish granizo, French grêle, and German Hagel all converge on the same concrete meteorological meaning.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Hail or hailstones, appearing in the NT exclusively in apocalyptic judgment contexts within Revelation. In 8:7 hail mixed with fire and blood is hurled to earth as the first trumpet sounds. In 11:19 great hail accompanies the dramatic opening of the heavenly temple. Revelation 16:21 describes hailstones of extraordinary weight (about a talent each) falling on humanity, who blaspheme God because of the plague. The multilingual unanimity -- Spanish granizo, French grêle, German Hagel -- confirms a single, concrete meteorological sense deployed as divine-judgment imagery. 4×
