φαρμᾰκ-είᾱ G5331
N-NFS  |  2× in 1 sense
sorcery, magic arts, use of drugs or spells
This term originally meant the use of drugs (whether medicinal or toxic), but developed the sense of sorcery, magic arts, or witchcraft—often associated with potions and spells. Paul lists it among the works of the flesh in Galatians. Revelation uses it to describe how Babylon the Great deceived all nations with her sorceries. The word connects pharmakological manipulation with occult practices, both involving spiritual deception.

Senses
1. sense 1 From φάρμακον ('drug, potion'), φαρμακεία evolved from drug-use to sorcery/witchcraft (often involving potions and spells). Gal 5:20 lists 'sorcery' (φαρμακεία) among fleshly works opposed to the Spirit—occult practices incompatible with Kingdom life. Rev 18:23 explains Babylon deceived all nations 'by your sorcery' (ἐν τῇ φαρμακείᾳ σου)—magical arts tied to her seductive, idolatrous commerce and spiritual adultery.
