Pharao -- Pharaoh, the royal title of the kings of ancient Egypt
Pharao is the Greek indeclinable form of the Hebrew par'oh, itself derived from Egyptian pr-aa ('great house'), which became the standard title for Egypt's monarchs. In the New Testament it refers specifically to the unnamed Pharaoh of the Exodus narrative, appearing in Stephen's speech (Acts 7:10, 13, 21), Paul's discussion of divine sovereignty in hardening Pharaoh's heart (Rom 9:17), and the description of Moses's faith in rejecting his identity as Pharaoh's adopted grandson (Heb 11:24). Every target language preserves the title with near-identical spelling -- Spanish Farao, French Pharaon, German Pharao -- reflecting its universal recognition as a historical royal designation.

Senses
1. sense 1 The royal title of the king of Egypt, used in the New Testament exclusively in reference to the Pharaoh of the Exodus period. Stephen recounts how Pharaoh elevated Joseph (Acts 7:10), how Joseph's family was made known to Pharaoh (Acts 7:13), and how Pharaoh's daughter adopted Moses (Acts 7:21). Paul invokes Pharaoh as the paradigm of divine hardening and sovereignty (Rom 9:17), and Hebrews celebrates Moses's refusal to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter (Heb 11:24). The name is universally preserved across languages -- Spanish Farao, French Pharaon, German Pharao -- confirming a single proper-title identity.
