hyssop, a plant used in purification rituals (possibly Origanum hirtum)
Hyssop was a plant used throughout Scripture for ritual purification and sprinkling. The exact botanical identification is debated (possibly marjoram or Syrian oregano rather than modern hyssop), but it had bushy branches suitable for sprinkling liquids. In John's Gospel, a sponge soaked with sour wine is put on hyssop and lifted to Jesus on the cross. Hebrews mentions Moses using hyssop to sprinkle blood during the covenant ceremony. Both recall Passover and purification rituals.

1. sense 1 Hebrew אֵזוֹב rendered as ὕσσωπος designates the purification plant (possibly Origanum hirtum). John 19:29 describes the wine-soaked sponge placed 'on hyssop' (ὑσσώπῳ) and lifted to Jesus—recalling Passover's hyssop for blood application and adding symbolic depth to crucifixion details. Heb 9:19 mentions Moses sprinkling blood 'with hyssop' in covenant ratification, linking old covenant purification rites to Christ's superior sacrifice.
