To blow gently, breathe softly; used of a gentle wind beginning to blow
This verb describes a gentle, soft blowing of wind—the opposite of a violent gale. Acts 27:13 uses it during Paul's voyage narrative: when 'a south wind blew gently,' the sailors thought conditions were favorable to sail, so they weighed anchor. The gentle breeze seemed safe, but it was the deceptive calm before the violent storm that would soon engulf them. All translations preserve the sense of soft, gentle blowing.

1. sense 1 — In Acts 27:13, Luke narrates, 'When a south wind blew gently, supposing they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor.' The participle describes a soft, gentle breeze (Spanish 'habiendo soplado suavemente,' having blown gently; German transliteration recognizing the gentle blowing) that gave the crew false confidence to sail. The gentle conditions were misleading—soon a violent northeaster would seize the ship. The verb's emphasis on gentleness heightens the irony of their miscalculation. 1×
