Tyre — the ancient Phoenician coastal city, cited in prophetic judgment oracles and Jesus' Galilean ministry
The proper noun Τύρος (Tyros) designates Tyre, the wealthy Phoenician port city on the Mediterranean coast of modern Lebanon. Jesus invokes Tyre in his woe oracles against Chorazin and Bethsaida: 'If the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago' (Matt 11:21-22; Luke 10:13-14). He withdraws to the region of Tyre and Sidon, where he heals the Syrophoenician woman's daughter (Matt 15:21; Mark 7:24, 31). Crowds from Tyre come to hear him (Mark 3:8; Luke 6:17). In Acts, Paul's ship puts in at Tyre, where he stays with disciples for seven days (Acts 21:3, 7). Spanish 'Tiro' and Arabic 'Sur' both name this ancient city.

Senses
1. Tyre (Phoenician city) Tyre, the ancient Phoenician port city on the Mediterranean coast, proverbially wealthy and historically subject to prophetic judgment (cf. Ezekiel 26-28; Isaiah 23). In the NT, Jesus uses it as a foil in his woe oracles: Tyre and Sidon would have repented had they seen his miracles (Matt 11:21-22; Luke 10:13-14). He ministers in its region, healing the Syrophoenician woman's daughter (Matt 15:21; Mark 7:24, 31), and crowds from Tyre attend his teaching (Mark 3:8; Luke 6:17). Paul visits the Tyrian Christian community en route to Jerusalem (Acts 21:3, 7). Spanish 'Tiro,' Korean 'Duro,' and Arabic 'Sur' all identify this same city. 11×
