This term designates various prickly, thorny plants, particularly the caltrop or puncture vine. In both uses, thistles represent worthless or harmful growth. Jesus uses them in the Sermon on the Mount as an example of bad fruit that reveals a corrupt tree. Hebrews employs them as the negative yield of land that receives God's blessing (rain) but produces thorns instead of crops—land in danger of being cursed.
