συμπόσι-ον G4849
group of people reclining together, dinner party
This noun originally referred to a drinking party or symposium, but came to mean simply a group of people gathered for a meal. In Mark 6:39, Jesus has the crowds sit down in groups (symposia symposia—groups upon groups) before feeding the five thousand. The repeated form emphasizes the orderly arrangement of many separate dining groups on the green grass.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Denotes a group of people gathered together for a meal, arranged in a cohesive party or company. The multilingual glosses (Spanish 'en grupos,' French 'groupe,' German 'Tischgesellschaft') highlight the collective dining aspect. Mark's doubled phrase 'groups upon groups' (6:39, repeated in the same verse) creates a vivid image of the organized arrangement of thousands of people in manageable meal-sized companies across the hillside. 2×
