To accuse falsely, extort; to blackmail or oppress through false charges
Συκοφαντέω originally meant to act as a 'fig-informer' (συκοφάντης), later developing into the general meaning of falsely accusing, blackmailing, or oppressing through vexatious prosecution. By New Testament times, it commonly described extortion by officials or false accusation for personal gain. John the Baptist tells soldiers not to 'accuse anyone falsely' or extort money (Luke 3:14). Zacchaeus, the repentant tax collector, confesses that if he has defrauded anyone, he will restore fourfold (Luke 19:8). Both contexts involve those in positions of power tempted to abuse it through false charges or extortion.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 Luke 3:14 uses the aorist subjunctive (συκοφαντήσητε, 'do not accuse falsely') in John's ethical instruction to soldiers—a negative command against abuse of authority. Luke 19:8 uses the aorist indicative (ἐσυκοφάντησα, 'I defrauded/extorted') in Zacchaeus's confession of past wrongs. Classical Greek extensively documented this term for blackmail, vexatious prosecution by officials, false accusation, and oppression of the weak—a significant social problem in ancient Athens and later.
