στάσις G4714
A standing or fixed position; by extension, a factional dispute, dissension, or violent uprising against authority.
Rooted in the verb histemi ('to stand'), stasis carries the concrete sense of a standing or established position, as in Hebrews 9:8 where the first tabernacle still 'has standing.' Far more often in the New Testament, however, it describes conflict: heated disputes within religious communities (Acts 15:2, 23:7) and violent insurrections against civil order, as when Barabbas is imprisoned for the stasis in Jerusalem (Luke 23:19, 25). Spanish distinguishes these well -- 'disension' for internal disagreement versus 'insurrección' for armed revolt -- while French collapses both under 'sédition,' revealing how thin the line between debate and uprising could be in the ancient world.
Senses
1. dissension, dispute — Heated disagreement or factional dispute within a group, especially over religious or doctrinal matters. Spanish 'disensión/división' and the pairing with zetesis ('debate') in Acts 15:2 highlight the verbal, argumentative character. In Acts 23:7 the Pharisee-Sadducee clash over resurrection becomes a stasis so fierce the tribune must intervene (Acts 23:10). 4×

2. insurrection, riot, uprising — Violent uprising, riot, or insurrection against civil authority. Luke 23:19 and 23:25 use it of the Jerusalem insurrection for which Barabbas was jailed; Mark 15:7 names his fellow insurgents. Spanish 'insurrección' and German 'Aufruhr' capture the physical violence absent from sense 1. Acts 19:40 warns that the Ephesian silversmith riot could be charged as stasis -- a serious Roman legal category. 4×

3. standing, status — The state of standing, having an established position or recognized status -- the most literal meaning derived from histemi. In Hebrews 9:8, the author argues that while the first tabernacle still 'has standing' (echouses stasis), the way into the holiest remains closed. Spanish 'posición' isolates this spatial-legal nuance from the conflict senses. 1×
