Σολομών G4672
Solomōn -- Solomon; the son of David and Bathsheba, Israel's proverbially wise king
The proper name Solomon (Solomōn) refers to the son of David who succeeded him as king over Israel, renowned above all for his God-given wisdom and the magnificence of his reign. Matthew's genealogy identifies him precisely: 'David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah' (Matt 1:6-7). Jesus invokes Solomon's splendor as a foil for divine providence -- 'even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these' (Matt 6:29; Luke 12:27) -- and his wisdom as a foil for his own authority: 'something greater than Solomon is here' (Matt 12:42; Luke 11:31). In John 10:23 and Acts 3:11; 5:12, 'Solomon's Portico' preserves his name in the architecture of the temple complex. Every target language retains the name by transliteration.
