Sidon, the ancient Phoenician coastal city paired with Tyre in prophetic judgment and Jesus' ministry
The proper name of a prominent Phoenician port city on the Mediterranean coast, north of Tyre. In the Gospels, Sidon appears alongside Tyre as a pagan city that would have repented had it witnessed Jesus' miracles (Matt 11:21–22; Luke 10:13–14). Jesus himself withdraws to the region of Tyre and Sidon (Matt 15:21; Mark 7:31), and crowds from Sidon come to hear him (Mark 3:8; Luke 6:17). In Acts 27:3, Paul stops at Sidon during his voyage to Rome. The pairing 'Tyre and Sidon' became proverbial in both judgment oracles and Gospel narrative.

Senses
1. Sidōn The proper geographical name of the ancient Phoenician coastal city (modern Saida, Lebanon), consistently paired with Tyre in biblical tradition. Jesus uses Sidon as a foil for unrepentant Galilean towns (Matt 11:21–22; Luke 10:13–14), visits its region (Matt 15:21; Mark 7:31), and draws crowds from it (Mark 3:8; Luke 6:17). Paul visits Sidon en route to Rome (Acts 27:3). Spanish 'Sidón' and French 'Sidon' preserve the proper noun with minimal variation across translation traditions. 10×
