Iron, the strong metal used for tools, weapons, and construction; symbol of strength and hardness
Revelation lists iron among the trade goods whose market collapses with Babylon's fall (18:12). Throughout Scripture, iron represents strength, durability, and sometimes oppression (iron yoke, iron furnace). Ancient metallurgy made iron valuable for agricultural implements, weapons, and construction. The inclusion of both precious metals (gold, silver) and utilitarian iron in Babylon's cargo shows the comprehensive scope of its commerce. Iron also appears symbolically in Revelation's visions: the rod of iron with which Christ rules (2:27, 12:5, 19:15) denotes unbreakable authority.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Revelation 18:12 uses the genitive σιδήρου in a list of metals and materials: 'vessels of ivory and precious wood and bronze and iron and marble.' The mundane metal appears alongside luxury items, representing complete commercial activity. From Classical Greek, σίδηρος (Doric σίδαρος) designated iron in all its uses. The multilingual witness (Spanish 'hierro,' French 'fer,' German 'Eisen') confirms the straightforward identification. Babylon traded everything from exotic luxuries to basic industrial metals. 1×
