The moon; the lunar body as a celestial object, often paired with the sun in eschatological or cosmic imagery.
Selene denotes the moon, one of the great luminaries of the created order. In the New Testament it appears almost exclusively in apocalyptic or cosmological contexts: the moon will not give its light at the end of the age (Matt 24:29; Mark 13:24), it will be turned to blood before the day of the Lord (Acts 2:20), and it possesses its own distinct glory among heavenly bodies (1 Cor 15:41). The Spanish luna, French lune, and German Mond all reflect a single, unified sense with no metaphorical extension in the NT corpus.
Senses
1. moon — The moon as a celestial body. All nine NT occurrences point to the physical lunar object, typically in passages describing cosmic signs or the ordering of heavenly luminaries. Jesus warns that the moon will be darkened (Matt 24:29; Mark 13:24), Luke records cosmic distress involving the moon (Luke 21:25), Peter cites Joel's prophecy of the moon turning to blood (Acts 2:20), and Paul distinguishes the moon's glory from that of the sun and stars (1 Cor 15:41). The multilingual evidence (spa luna, fra lune, deu Mond, eng moon) is perfectly uniform, confirming a single undifferentiated sense. 9×
