N-NFS  |  4× in 1 sense
Sarah; the wife of Abraham, mother of Isaac, and matriarch of the covenant people of Israel.
The Greek form of the Hebrew name Sarah (originally Sarai, renamed in Gen 17:15), meaning 'princess.' In the New Testament, Sarah appears as a model of faith and covenant promise. Paul cites her in Romans to demonstrate that God's promise operates through supernatural power rather than natural ability: Abraham did not waver despite Sarah's barrenness (Rom 4:19), and 'through Sarah' the word of promise came (Rom 9:9). Hebrews celebrates her faith in conceiving Isaac beyond childbearing age (Heb 11:11), and Peter holds her up as an example of holy conduct and gentle trust for believing wives (1 Pet 3:6).

Senses
1. sense 1 The proper name of Abraham's wife, the matriarch whose miraculous conception of Isaac embodies God's faithfulness to his covenant promises. The transliteration is remarkably stable across languages--'Sara' in French, German, and Spanish, with only minor variation ('Sarra' in some English manuscripts following the LXX doubling of rho). Each New Testament reference highlights a different facet of her significance: her barrenness overcome by divine power (Rom 4:19), her role as channel of the promise (Rom 9:9), her faith in receiving strength to conceive (Heb 11:11), and her submissive trust as a model for Christian wives (1 Pet 3:6). She functions typologically as the 'free woman' whose children inherit the promise (cf. Gal 4:22-31).
