A compound verb combining suffering with temporal priority. Classical usage included suffering first or being ill-treated before some other event. Paul reminds the Thessalonians in 1 Thessalonians 2:2 of how he and his companions had previously suffered and been shamefully treated in Philippi before coming to Thessalonica. The perfect participle emphasizes the continuing effects of that prior suffering. Far from disqualifying them, their beforehand-suffering validated their courage in preaching despite opposition—they knew what awaited them but came anyway.
