A noun describing someone prone to hitting or striking—a brawler, violent person, one quick to use fists. Paul uses it in his pastoral qualifications for church leaders. An overseer or elder must not be a 'striker'—not violent, not given to physical aggression (1 Tim 3:3; Titus 1:7). This disqualifies the hot-tempered man who settles disputes with force rather than wisdom. Classical usage could describe fierce, warlike men or even violent wine (harsh, biting). In church leadership, gentleness not violence must characterize those who shepherd God's flock.
