Wandering from truth: error, delusion, or false belief; also deliberate deception or fraud.
Plane derives from the verb planao ('to wander, lead astray') and carries the image of someone lost off the true path. In nine of its ten NT occurrences it denotes the state of being in error — a spiritual or moral delusion, as in the 'error of Balaam' (Jude 11) or the 'working of error' God sends upon those who refuse the truth (2 Thess 2:11). Paul uses it in Rom 1:27 for the 'error' of idolatry that yields its own penalty. But in Matt 27:64 the chief priests warn Pilate that a second 'deception' would be worse than the first — here the word shifts from passive delusion to active, calculated fraud. Spanish distinguishes the two cleanly: 'error' for the wandering state, 'engano' for the willful trick.

In Matt 27:64 the chief priests tell Pilate that the last 'deception' (plane) would be worse than the first, referring to an anticipated conspiracy by the disciples. 1. error, delusion, going astray — A state of wandering from the truth — error, delusion, or false belief, whether doctrinal or moral. This is the dominant NT sense, describing the condition of being led astray rather than the act of leading others astray. Eph 4:14 warns against 'every wind of doctrine' and the 'cunning craftiness' that produces plane; Jas 5:20 speaks of turning a sinner from the 'error' of his way; 2 Thess 2:11 pairs it with a divine act of judgment.
