Peter; Simon Peter, the leading apostle, named 'Rock' by Jesus
Petros means 'stone' or 'rock' in Greek, but in the New Testament it functions almost exclusively as the personal name of Simon Peter, the fisherman from Bethsaida whom Jesus called first among the Twelve. The name itself is a translation of the Aramaic Kepha (Cephas), bestowed by Jesus in the declaration of Matthew 16:18: 'You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.' With 156 occurrences, Peter's name appears in every Gospel, throughout Acts, and in epistolary references, making him the most frequently named disciple in the New Testament.
