V-RPM/P-AFS  |  3× in 1 sense
to cover around, to veil, to conceal; to wrap or envelop something completely
This verb means to cover all around or envelop something, hiding it from view. The guards at Jesus' trial 'blindfolded' him before striking him and demanding he prophesy who hit him (Mark 14:65; Luke 22:64). Hebrews describes the ark in the tabernacle as being 'covered on all sides' with gold (Heb 9:4). Whether veiling a face or overlaying with precious metal, the word emphasizes thorough covering that conceals or protects the underlying object.

Senses
1. sense 1 Cross-linguistic evidence stresses complete covering: English 'having-been-covered/having-covered/to-cover', Spanish 'a-cubrir/cubierta-alrededor/habiendo-cubierto', French 'couvrir', German 'verhuellen/περικαλύψαντες'. The lexicon defines it as 'cover all round' with meanings including wrapping in garments and metaphorically throwing 'a veil of darkness over deeds'. Mark 14:65 and Luke 22:64 describe blindfolding/covering Jesus' face before mockery. Heb 9:4 describes the ark 'covered on all sides with gold'. Complete envelopment or concealment is the consistent meaning.
