Adj-NMP  |  6× in 1 sense
Five thousand; a cardinal number used in the NT for the crowd fed by Jesus.
Pentakischilioi means simply 'five thousand,' yet it has become one of the most iconic numbers in all of Scripture. Every occurrence connects to the miraculous feeding of the multitude — the only miracle (besides the resurrection) recorded in all four Gospels. Matthew 14:21 and Mark 6:44 report the original count; Matthew 16:9 and Mark 8:19 recall it in Jesus' later teaching. Luke 9:14 provides the detail that Jesus had the crowd sit in groups of fifty. The cross-linguistic uniformity — Spanish 'cinco mil,' French 'cinq mille,' German 'fuenftausend' — reflects the straightforward numerical meaning.

Senses
1. sense 1 The cardinal number five thousand, used exclusively in the NT in connection with the miraculous feeding of the multitude. The translations are perfectly transparent across languages: Spanish 'cinco mil,' French 'cinq mille,' German 'fuenftausend.' All six occurrences (Matt 14:21; 16:9; Mark 6:44; 8:19; Luke 9:14; John 6:10) refer to the same event or its later recall, making this number a touchstone for faith in divine provision. Matthew 14:21 notes these were 'five thousand men, besides women and children,' underscoring the scale of the miracle.
