A military camp, encampment, or army; specifically, the Roman barracks (Fortress Antonia) in Jerusalem.
Parembolē originally meant the drawing up of troops in battle order, and its NT usage retains that military flavor. In Acts 21-23, it refers specifically to the Roman barracks — the Fortress Antonia adjacent to the Temple — where Paul was taken into protective custody by the tribune (Acts 21:34, 22:24, 23:10). Outside Acts, the word broadens to mean a camp or encampment: Hebrews recalls the Israelite camp from which sin offerings were carried 'outside the camp' (Heb 13:11, 13), and Revelation envisions enemies surrounding 'the camp of the saints' (Rev 20:9). Spanish distinguishes the two well: fortaleza ('fortress') for the barracks, campamento ('camp') for the broader sense.
