La particula ou (con sus variantes fonologicas ouk ante espiritu suave y ouch ante espiritu aspero) es la negacion griega estandar para enunciados facticos en modo indicativo. Contrasta nitidamente con me, que niega deseos, mandatos e hipotesis: donde me dice 'que no sea asi,' ou declara rotundamente 'no es asi.' Con 1.635 ocurrencias en el Nuevo Testamento, constituye un elemento gramatical esencial: niega verbos, modifica adjetivos y forma preguntas retoricas que esperan respuesta afirmativa. El espanol 'no,' el frances 'ne...pas' y el aleman 'nicht' corresponden uniformemente a esta unica funcion, confirmando su caracter monosemico.
