ὅμοιος G3664
like, similar, resembling — expressing likeness or analogy, especially in parables and visions
Homoios is the adjective of comparison par excellence in the New Testament, appearing 45 times as the linguistic engine of Jesus' parabolic teaching: 'The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed' (Matt 13:31), 'like a merchant seeking fine pearls' (Matt 13:45), 'like a net cast into the sea' (Matt 13:47). Beyond the parables, it describes the likeness of heavenly beings in Revelation — creatures 'like a lion,' 'like a calf,' 'like a man' (Rev 4:7) — and the risen Christ's appearance 'like a son of man' (Rev 1:13). The word's parabolic function is strikingly uniform across translations: Spanish 'semejante,' French 'semblable,' German 'ähnlich/gleich' — each serving as the standard formula for opening an analogy.
Senses
1. like, similar, resembling — An adjective of resemblance or analogy, predicating likeness between two entities or situations. Dominates the parabolic formula homoia estin he basileia ('the kingdom is like...') throughout Matthew 13 and 20, and extends to visionary descriptions in Revelation where heavenly beings and cosmic phenomena are depicted through analogy (Rev 1:13; 4:3, 7; 9:7, 10, 19). Also used in ethical comparison — the wise man is 'like' one who builds on rock (Matt 7:24), and servants are called to be 'like' those waiting for their master (Luke 12:36). All 45 occurrences express this single comparative function, differing only in what is being compared. 45×
