1. inhabited world, civilized earth — The inhabited world or civilized earth, often referring to the Roman Empire or the whole human-populated earth. Used of worldwide events like the census under Augustus (Luke 2:1), eschatological tribulation coming upon the whole world (Rev 3:10, 12:9, 16:14), Satan's temptation showing all the kingdoms of the world (Luke 4:5, Matt 24:14), and the gospel being preached throughout the oikoumene (Acts 17:6, 19:27, 24:5).
