El mundo habitado; la tierra civilizada y poblada, frecuentemente referida al Imperio Romano o a toda la humanidad. Originalmente significando 'la (tierra) habitada' con un γῆ ('tierra') implícito, esta palabra se expandió desde el mundo de habla griega hasta abarcar toda la tierra poblada, y en tiempos romanos frecuentemente representaba al Imperio mismo. Lucas la usa para el censo que llevó a María y José a Belén (Lc 2:1) y para una hambruna predicha en todo el mundo (Hch 11:28). En contextos escatológicos describe el alcance de la tribulación y la proclamación del evangelio: 'Será predicado este evangelio del reino en toda la οἰκουμένη' (Mt 24:14). La palabra también tiene un sentido de era futura en Hebreos 2:5, donde el 'mundo venidero' es sometido a Cristo.
