Ninevites, inhabitants of the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh
The Ninevites were the people of Nineveh, the great Assyrian capital to which Jonah was sent. Jesus uses them as a positive example: they repented at Jonah's preaching, and will rise in judgment against Jesus' generation who rejected a greater than Jonah (Matt 12:41, Luke 11:30, 32). The contrast is stark—pagan Ninevites heeded warning; covenant Israel rejected Messiah. The consistent rendering—'ninivitas,' 'Ninivite'—identifies this people by their city.
