The name was common in Rome, and some scholars identify this Narcissus with Tiberius Claudius Narcissus, a wealthy and powerful freedman under Emperor Claudius. If so, his household slaves and dependents would have formed a sizable group, some of whom had come to faith in Christ. The Greek word also denotes the narcissus flower, known in antiquity for its narcotic properties—hence the mythological figure who fell in love with his own reflection. Paul's greeting highlights the penetration of the gospel into influential Roman households, even those connected to the imperial court.
