N-AFS  |  1× in 1 sense
Nain, a village in Galilee where Jesus raised a widow's son from the dead
Nain lies in southern Galilee, near Mount Tabor, about six miles southeast of Nazareth. Luke 7:11-17 recounts Jesus' compassion upon encountering a funeral procession: the only son of a widow being carried out for burial. Jesus touched the bier, commanded the young man to rise, and gave him back to his mother—an act evoking Elijah's resurrection of the widow's son at Zarephath (1 Kings 17:17-24). The village name may derive from a Hebrew root meaning 'pleasant' or 'pasture.' This miracle foreshadows the greater resurrection Jesus himself would undergo and validates his identity as the promised prophet greater than Elijah.
