Ναθαναήλ G3482
Nathanael; a disciple of Jesus, probably identical with Bartholomew
An indeclinable Hebrew name meaning 'God has given' (from netan + El), borne by the disciple whom Philip brought to Jesus in John 1:45-49. Nathanael's initial skepticism ('Can anything good come from Nazareth?') yields to dramatic confession when Jesus reveals supernatural knowledge of him under the fig tree. He reappears in John 21:2 at the post-resurrection fishing scene, identified as being from Cana of Galilee. Most scholars equate him with Bartholomew of the Synoptic lists.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The personal name of a disciple from Cana of Galilee, introduced to Jesus by Philip (John 1:45-49) and present at the Sea of Tiberias appearance (John 21:2). The Hebrew etymon netanel ('gift of God') is preserved uniformly across translations—'Nathanael' in English, French, German, and Spanish alike. His encounter with Jesus moves from skeptical inquiry to the climactic confession 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel' (John 1:49). 6×
