Nazareth -- the Galilean town where Jesus was raised, also spelled Nazara
Nazareth (Nazareth/Nazara) is the small town in lower Galilee where Mary and Joseph lived and where Jesus grew up. Despite its obscurity -- Nathanael's dismissive 'Can anything good come from Nazareth?' (John 1:46) captures its reputation -- it became one of the most recognized place names in history. The New Testament manuscripts preserve multiple spellings (Nazareth, Nazaret, Nazara), reflecting Semitic-to-Greek transliteration variation rather than different locations. Luke places the Annunciation there (1:26), and Matthew identifies it as the fulfillment of a prophetic word: 'He shall be called a Nazarene' (2:23). Every target language retains the name with only minor phonological adaptation.

Senses
1. Nazareth, Nazara (place name) The town in lower Galilee where Jesus was raised, variously spelled Nazareth and Nazara in the manuscripts. All twelve occurrences designate the same location, from the Annunciation (Luke 1:26) to Jesus' departure for ministry (Mark 1:9). Spanish Nazaret, French and German Nazareth confirm a single toponym. 12×
