ten thousand, countless, a myriad or very large number
A myriad is ten thousand, but often used for an uncountably large number. Jesus' parable features a servant who owes 'ten thousand talents'—an impossible, hyperbolic debt (Matt 18:24). Paul says he'd rather speak five intelligible words than 'ten thousand words' in an unknown tongue (1 Cor 14:19). He tells the Corinthians they may have 'countless guides' but only one father (1 Cor 4:15). The term emphasizes vastness beyond easy counting. Spanish 'diez mil' and French 'dix mille' preserve the literal number, while 'countless' captures the hyperbolic sense.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Ten thousand, or by extension, countless or innumerable—a very large, often indefinite number. Matthew 18:24 uses it for an unpayably huge debt (ten thousand talents). 1 Corinthians 4:15 contrasts one father with μυρίοι (countless) tutors. 1 Corinthians 14:19 prefers five intelligible words to ten thousand unintelligible ones. The Greek μυρίοι can be literal (10,000) or hyperbolic (innumerable). Spanish and French maintain the numerical precision ('diez mil'), while context determines whether it's exact or emphatic. 3×
