μόδιος G3426
basket, bushel, a dry-measure container or vessel
The modius was a Roman dry measure, roughly equivalent to a peck or bushel. Jesus uses it as a household object in his teaching about light: no one lights a lamp and puts it 'under a basket' (Matt 5:15, Mark 4:21, Luke 11:33). The image is absurd—hiding light under a grain container. The point is about visibility and purpose. The term appears consistently as a container for hiding: 'almud' (Spanish), 'boisseau' (French), 'Scheffel' (German)—all grain-measure baskets.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A basket or bushel, specifically a dry-measure container (modius) used for grain. In all three occurrences (Matt 5:15, Mark 4:21, Luke 11:33), Jesus uses it as the absurd hiding place for a lamp—illustrating how disciples should not conceal their light. The Greek μόδιος is borrowed from Latin modius, a standard measure of about 8.75 liters. Spanish 'almud' and French 'boisseau' are equivalent traditional grain measures. 3×
