Μαρία G3137
Maria / Mariam -- Mary; the name of several women in the NT including the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene
Maria (Hellenized) and Mariam (Semitic indeclinable) render the Hebrew-Aramaic name Miryam, borne by at least six women in the New Testament. Most prominent is Mary the mother of Jesus, central to the infancy narratives and present at the cross (John 19:25) and in the upper room (Acts 1:14). Mary Magdalene, first witness to the resurrection (John 20:1-18), is the second most frequent bearer. Others include Mary of Bethany (Luke 10:39), Mary wife of Clopas (John 19:25), and Mary of Rome (Rom 16:6). The two Greek forms reflect stylistic rather than semantic variation.
