N-AMS  |  9× in 1 sense
Pearl; a precious gem formed in a mollusk, used literally of costly jewelry and figuratively of supreme spiritual value.
A pearl -- the lustrous gem treasured across the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. Jesus draws on the pearl's extraordinary value in two memorable teachings: casting pearls before swine (Matt 7:6), where wisdom is wasted on those who cannot appreciate it, and the merchant who sells everything for one pearl of great price (Matt 13:45-46), an image of the kingdom's surpassing worth. In Revelation, Babylon adorns herself with pearls as symbols of extravagant wealth (Rev 17:4; 18:12, 16), and the gates of the New Jerusalem are each a single pearl (Rev 21:21).

Senses
1. pearl A precious gem formed within a mollusk shell, valued as costly merchandise and rich adornment. Every major translation tradition renders this straightforwardly -- Spanish 'perla,' French 'perle,' German 'Perlen' -- reflecting the pearl's universal recognition as a luxury item. The NT employs it both literally (1 Tim 2:9 warns against ostentatious pearl-wearing; Revelation catalogs pearls among Babylon's trade goods) and in two of Jesus' most vivid parables: the pearl of great price (Matt 13:45-46) as an image of the kingdom, and pearls before swine (Matt 7:6) as a warning about discernment.
