This name appears only in John 18:10, identifying the servant of the high priest whom Peter struck with a sword during Jesus' arrest. John alone among the Gospel writers names this individual, perhaps because John wrote later when those involved were no longer at risk of retaliation. The name is a Hellenized form of the Hebrew/Aramaic word for 'king' (מֶלֶךְ), possibly indicating royal service or simply a common name among servants. Luke adds that Jesus healed the severed ear, showing Jesus' compassion even toward those who came to arrest him.
