To declare someone blessed or fortunate, to pronounce them happy. Mary's Magnificat predicts that all generations will call her blessed (Luke 1:48) because of God's favor. James says we count blessed those who persevered (5:11), particularly Job. Classical Greek used it for congratulating someone on their strength, blessing someone's happy ignorance, or ironically congratulating fools. The verb implies recognizing and publicly declaring someone's favorable condition.
