The noun λίμνη (limne) means 'lake,' appearing in two sharply distinct registers. Luke alone among the Gospel writers uses it for the Sea of Galilee, calling it 'the lake of Gennesaret' (Luke 5:1-2) and simply 'the lake' during the storm and the Gerasene episode (Luke 8:22-33), preferring the geographical precision of limne over the Semitic 'sea' (thalassa). In Revelation, the word takes on a terrifying eschatological dimension as the 'lake of fire' — the final destination of the beast, the false prophet, death, Hades, and all whose names are not in the book of life (Rev 19:20; 20:10, 14-15; 21:8). Spanish 'lago' and French 'lac' serve both senses.
