λίμν-η G3041
Lake — a body of standing water; the Lake of Gennesaret (Sea of Galilee) and the eschatological lake of fire
The noun λίμνη (limne) means 'lake,' appearing in two sharply distinct registers. Luke alone among the Gospel writers uses it for the Sea of Galilee, calling it 'the lake of Gennesaret' (Luke 5:1-2) and simply 'the lake' during the storm and the Gerasene episode (Luke 8:22-33), preferring the geographical precision of limne over the Semitic 'sea' (thalassa). In Revelation, the word takes on a terrifying eschatological dimension as the 'lake of fire' — the final destination of the beast, the false prophet, death, Hades, and all whose names are not in the book of life (Rev 19:20; 20:10, 14-15; 21:8). Spanish 'lago' and French 'lac' serve both senses.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A natural body of standing fresh water, specifically the Lake of Gennesaret (Sea of Galilee) in Luke's Gospel. Luke uses limne where Matthew and Mark write thalassa ('sea'), reflecting educated Greek geographical usage. Appears in the calling of the first disciples (Luke 5:1-2), the stilling of the storm (Luke 8:22-23), and the Gerasene demoniac narrative (Luke 8:33). Spanish 'lago' and French 'lac' translate directly. 11×
