Little dog, small household dog; a diminutive term for a pet dog, distinct from wild or scavenging dogs.
The diminutive form of κύων ('dog'), κυνάριον specifically denotes a small domestic dog—a household pet rather than the despised street scavenger. This distinction is theologically significant in the Syrophoenician woman's exchange with Jesus (Matt 15:26–27; Mark 7:27–28). When Jesus says the children's bread should not be thrown to the κυναρίοις, the woman brilliantly turns the diminutive to her advantage: even the little dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs. German Hündlein and Spanish perritos both preserve the affectionate diminutive nuance that makes this dialogue so memorable.

Senses
1. sense 1 Little dog, household pet dog. A diminutive distinguishing small domestic dogs from the larger, unclean street dogs (κύνες) of the ancient Near East. All four NT occurrences appear in the same episode: the Syrophoenician/Canaanite woman's dialogue with Jesus (Matt 15:26–27; Mark 7:27–28). The diminutive form softens the metaphor—these are pets under the family table, not scavengers outside. The woman seizes on this nuance to argue that even κυνάρια receive crumbs from their masters' table. Spanish perritos and German Hündlein faithfully preserve the diminutive, which is essential to the passage's rhetorical power.
