To shut, close, lock -- of doors, gates, and figuratively of heavenly authority and access
The verb kleio covers the full range of shutting in the New Testament, from the physical closing of a door to the authoritative barring of cosmic access. Jesus instructs his followers to 'shut your door' when praying in secret (Matt 6:6), and the parable of the ten virgins turns on the terrifying moment when 'the door was shut' (Matt 25:10). But kleio also operates at a higher register: the Pharisees 'shut the kingdom of heaven' against people (Matt 23:13), Christ holds the key of David and 'shuts so that no one opens' (Rev 3:7), and Elijah 'shut heaven' so that it did not rain (Luke 4:25). The multilingual glosses -- 'cerrar,' 'fermer,' 'schliessen' -- are identical across both registers, but the objects of the verb reveal the sense boundary.
Senses
1. shut authoritatively or bar access — To shut authoritatively or bar access in a figurative, cosmic, or spiritual sense. The subject exercises divine or delegated authority over what is opened or closed: the Pharisees 'shut the kingdom of heaven' (Matt 23:13), Christ 'opens and no one shuts, shuts and no one opens' (Rev 3:7), heaven is 'shut' against rain (Luke 4:25, Rev 11:6), the abyss is locked (Rev 20:3), and a person 'shuts his compassion' (1 John 3:17). The objects -- kingdom, heaven, abyss, compassion -- mark this as the authoritative rather than physical sense. Nine occurrences place it as the dominant NT usage. 9×

2. shut or close physically — To shut or close a physical barrier such as a door or gate, restricting passage or access to a space. Jesus tells his disciples to 'shut your door' for private prayer (Matt 6:6); the householder in the parable has already 'shut the door' (Luke 11:7); the bridegroom's door is 'shut' against the foolish virgins (Matt 25:10); and the disciples meet behind 'shut doors' out of fear (John 20:19, 20:26). Spanish 'cerrada/cerrado' and German 'verschlossen' are the same lexemes as in sense 1, but the concrete physical objects -- doors, rooms, gates -- distinguish this cluster of seven occurrences. 7×
