V-RPM/P-GMP  |  1× in 1 sense
To be seared, branded, or cauterized; to have one's conscience hardened as if burned
This verb in passive form literally means to be branded or seared with a hot iron, a term from both slavery and medicine. First Timothy 4:2 uses it metaphorically to describe consciences that have been cauterized—rendered insensitive through repeated violation, like scar tissue that no longer feels. The Spanish 'cauterizados' and German 'gebrandmarkt' capture this medical imagery of deadened moral sensitivity.

Senses
1. sense 1 Describes the passive state of being seared or cauterized, particularly of the conscience becoming insensitive through moral compromise. Paul warns of false teachers whose repeated deceit has scarred their moral awareness, leaving them unable to recognize truth or feel conviction, like cauterized flesh that has lost sensation.
