His successor Festus similarly asks Paul if he is willing to go to Jerusalem for trial, 'wishing to do the Jews a favor (χάριν καταθέσθαι)' (Acts 25:9). In both cases, the infinitive phrase means to grant a favor or win favor by accommodating the Jewish leaders' desires. The verb thus describes political maneuvering, the laying down of a favor as one might deposit a gift, currying favor at Paul's expense.
