Tragar, devorar, abrumar; engullir por completo, usado literal y figuradamente de destrucción o aflicción.
Καταπίνω significa tragar o engullir por completo, con una imagen física vívida y una poderosa fuerza metafórica. Jesús lo emplea con mordaz ironía en Mt 23:24: colar el mosquito y tragarse el camello. Pablo lo utiliza triunfalmente: la muerte es «tragada» en victoria (1 Co 15:54), y lo mortal es absorbido por la vida (2 Co 5:4). También puede describir el ser consumido por una tristeza excesiva (2 Co 2:7). Hebreos 11:29 recuerda al Mar Rojo tragando a los egipcios. El término transmite la totalidad violenta del acto de engullir.
