To cleanse or purify; making clean physically (healing lepers, declaring foods pure) or spiritually (removing sin and moral defilement).
A verb spanning the full range of purification in the New Testament — from the dramatic healing of lepers ('Be clean!' Matt 8:3) to the deep inner work of God purifying hearts by faith (Acts 15:9). Jesus used it when he declared all foods clean (Mark 7:19), and the epistles apply it to Christ's sacrificial cleansing of his people (Eph 5:26; Titus 2:14; 1 John 1:7). The physical and spiritual senses are deeply interwoven: the same God who healed skin diseases also promises to wash away sin. French uses 'purifier' for both, while Spanish distinguishes 'limpiar' (physical cleaning) from 'purificar' (spiritual purification), illuminating the dual register.

Senses
1. cleanse physically or ritually To make physically or ritually clean by removing impurity, especially healing lepers and pronouncing foods or vessels clean. Jesus commands lepers 'Be cleansed!' (Matt 8:2-3; Luke 17:14) and the apostles are told to 'cleanse lepers' as a sign of the kingdom (Matt 10:8). Mark 7:19 extends it to the declaration that all foods are clean. Spanish 'limpiar/limpiar' and German 'reinigen' both maintain the concrete, physical register across these 22 occurrences. 22×

2. purify morally or spiritually To purify from sin, moral defilement, or spiritual impurity, with God, Christ, or his blood as the agent of cleansing. God purified Gentile hearts by faith (Acts 15:9), Christ gave himself to 'purify for himself a people' (Titus 2:14), and his blood 'cleanses us from all sin' (1 John 1:7; cf. Heb 9:14). Spanish shifts to 'purificar' and 'habiendo purificado,' while French maintains 'purifier' — both marking the inward, moral transformation that transcends physical washing.
