Ἰωάνης G2491
John — Hellenized form of Hebrew Yohanan ('YHWH is gracious'), designating several key NT figures including the Baptist and the Apostle
Iōannēs is the Greek rendering of Hebrew Yohanan, meaning 'YHWH is gracious.' Its 135 New Testament occurrences distribute across several figures, but two dominate. John the Baptist, the voice crying in the wilderness (Matt 3:1-3), accounts for the largest share — the prophetic forerunner who baptized Jesus and was beheaded by Herod Antipas. John the son of Zebedee, one of the Twelve and part of Jesus' inner circle with Peter and James (Matt 4:21; Mark 5:37), is the second major referent and is traditionally associated with the Fourth Gospel and the Johannine epistles. Minor bearers include John Mark, companion of Paul and Barnabas (Acts 12:12, 25), and Simon Peter's father (John 1:42; 21:15-17).
Senses
1. John (personal name) — The proper name Iōannēs (from Hebrew Yohanan, 'YHWH is gracious'), applied to several New Testament figures. The foremost is John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus through preaching and baptism (Matt 3:1-12; John 1:6-8). The second major bearer is John son of Zebedee, apostle, member of Jesus' inner three, and traditional author of the Fourth Gospel (Matt 4:21; Mark 9:2; Acts 3:1). Additional bearers include John Mark (Acts 12:12, 25; 13:5) and Simon Peter's father (John 1:42). Spanish 'Juan,' French 'Jean,' and German 'Johannes' each reflect distinct vernacular adaptations of this widely transmitted name. 135×
