N-NFS  |  3× in 1 sense
equality, fairness, equity; equal proportion or just dealing
This noun denotes equality, fairness, or equitable distribution. Paul uses it three times discussing financial equity in the church. In 2 Corinthians 8:13-14 he explains the principle of equality in giving: 'not that others should be eased and you burdened, but by equality... that your abundance may supply their lack... that there may be equality.' Colossians 4:1 commands masters to give servants 'what is just and equal (or fair),' recognizing mutual obligations. Classical usage includes equality, political justice, proportion in ratios, and fair dealing. The New Testament use focuses on equitable distribution—economic balance in the body of Christ and just treatment in social hierarchies.

Senses
1. sense 1 The sense emphasizes fair, equitable distribution and treatment. Paul's 2 Corinthians argument for the Jerusalem collection appeals to equality as a principle: the Corinthians' current abundance should meet others' need, anticipating future reciprocity. This isn't absolute uniformity but balancing abundance and lack across the body. The Colossians use extends equality to social relations—masters owing fairness to slaves, acknowledging their Master in heaven who shows no partiality. The Spanish 'igualdad,' French 'égalité,' and German 'Gleichheit' all point to equality/fairness. The word operates in contexts of distribution and relationship, calling for balance, reciprocity, and justice rather than exploitation or inequality.
