ἴσος G2470
Adj-AFS  |  8× in 1 sense
Equal, same, or equivalent in measure, quality, or status; denoting parity or correspondence.
An adjective expressing equality or equivalence, ἴσος appears in contexts where parity — whether fair or provocative — is at stake. The laborers in Jesus' vineyard parable complain that the master has made latecomers 'equal' to those who bore the day's heat (Matt 20:12), exposing human resentment at divine generosity. The false witnesses against Jesus at trial cannot produce 'consistent' testimony (Mark 14:56, 59). Most explosively, Jesus is accused of 'making himself equal with God' (John 5:18), and Phil 2:6 speaks of equality with God as something Christ did not grasp at. Spanish igual and French égal preserve both the mathematical and social dimensions of the word.

Senses
1. equal, same, consistent Equal, equivalent, or consistent in quantity, quality, or status, implying a measured correspondence between two things. The vineyard workers protest that the master has made the latecomers ἴσους — equal — to them (Matt 20:12), exposing the scandal of grace. At Jesus' trial, the false witnesses fail to give ἴσαι (consistent, agreeing) testimony (Mark 14:56, 59), where the sense shades toward 'matching' or 'in agreement.' The most theologically charged usage is John 5:18, where Jesus is accused of making himself ἴσον τῷ θεῷ ('equal with God'), and Phil 2:6, where τὸ εἶναι ἴσα θεῷ ('equality with God') frames the great kenosis hymn. Luke 6:34 and Acts 11:17 apply the term to equivalent measure in lending and divine gifting.
